Protecting your personal belongings outside the home

Local, national and international cover
Most home insurance policies offer people the option to cover their personal possessions when outside of the home. This can cover possessions locally (perhaps a wallet when doing the weekly shop) or when being carried further afield (luggage while on holiday, for example). Such cover is typically called 'personal belongings cover away from home*', and can protect possessions against accidental damage, loss and theft.
Don't go over the limit
Commonly a policy holder's insurance company may set a total monetary limit to the cover offered. As long as the total possessions taken outside the home don’t exceed this value, and each item is worth no more than a stated single article limit, policy holders will be protected.
If some items people wish to cover while they are away from home are worth more than the single article limit, they may be able to specify this item on their contents policy and arrange individual cover for it. However, this could incur an extra charge.
Choosing the personal belongings option gives policy holders flexibility as it allows them to vary what they take away from home, as long as any agreed value limits are adhered to.
Be aware of the time limits
Generally this valuable additional protection covers policy holders for an unlimited period of time in the UK and Europe but for a limited number of days throughout the rest of the world.
The I4R team recommend that people check with their insurance provider to see what they are covered for, what the single article limit is, and how long they are covered for when in the United Kingdom or abroad.
Insure4Retirement offers a comprehensive personal belongings cover option to their home contents insurance policy holders, and this provides cover up to £2000 for any single item while covering cash up to £500 and credit cards up to £500. There is unlimited protection in the UK and Europe and cover for up to 60 days world-wide.
