The winter may be well and truly over, taking care of your car isn't
Thursday, 19th May 2011
If you want to ensure your motoring costs, possible accident risks and vehicle wear and tear are kept to an absolute minimum as the seasons move from winter, through the spring to a (hopefully!) warm and dry summer, it makes sense to keep up to speed with what the motoring experts are saying.
So here are a few tips from them, for you
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) suggests a number of routes you could take to happier motoring this summer*. You might consider for example:
- Giving your car a thorough clean to avoid the damage that salt - which is corrosive - could cause through rusting if left on the bodywork. Include the underside, if possible, even though it might mean a quick visit to a specialist car wash.
- Keeping your air conditioning working efficiently, paying particular attention to any pollen filters fitted to your vehicle. Cool, filtered air could keep drivers alert on warm days while also helping hay fever sufferers. After all, a sneezing fit at 70 mph on a motor way can obviously be dangerous.
- Refilling washer fluid reservoirs can help to keep your windscreen clear and reduce the risk of contaminants, like insects and sap, from sticking.
- Checking your wheel and tyre alignment, because those winter potholes don't just jar your nerves but can jar your steering too. Unaligned tyres might also wear quicker and can be expensive to replace.
- Making sure your anti-freeze levels are adequate all through the year, as it contains chemicals called 'corrosion inhibitors.' These can help protect your engine against expensive damage.
Take a few minutes now, it could save you a lot of time later
Most of the suggestions above are quite straightforward and inexpensive to undertake and might save you time, money and hassle during the longer days ahead.
Here's to happy and safe motoring this summer!
